October 27, 2019: Video Games as a Narrative Medium

Video games have came a long way from matching blocks on [[w:Tetris|Tetris]. Nowadays, video games can take you on journey that you get yourself consumed in. Video games can suck you in with the nice graphics but the storytelling which helps guide you through the journey is also very compelling. Technology has created more mediums in which narratives can be told and video games are on of those mediums. Video games get you fully immersed into the storytelling by connecting you with the main character as you achieve goals in your journey.Connecting with the main character has become more engaging with the advancement of gaming systems such as virtual reality which can allow you to see what's happening with your character through their eyes.[1]

One element that shows how video games work as a narrative medium is the fact that there is a problem that needs to be solved.[2]Almost every single video has some sort of issue that the player must solve whether its saving a princess from and evil villain or or defeating the monster that is destroying the town. When you have an issue to solve, having a narrative as a guide will help the player get through the tasks. Video games should not replace books in storytelling but, it is worth noting that video games can also have a positive impact on people if played responsibly. Problem solving skills are something to learn through these video games and the stories they can tell.

December 8, 2019: Reflection Essay

I am so glad to be writing this reflection essay. Working in Wikipedia again has once again been pretty interesting. It has been a learning experience for sure.

When I began working on my article for the project in the class, I read over what was already there so I could figure out what would need to be added to improve on it. I then started to find articles that would help in adding some important information that was missing from the article. Finding the articles was a little hard but once I got one, more started to come to me easier. When looking at the article, I thought that a background section would be a good addition to the page. Giving some insight into how the article came to be was a good addition to the article. I also thought that adding an analysis section would be good for the article as well. This part would be good to bring other people's ideas about Julian Dibbell's article together. Adding these two sections helped bring out the effects that Dibbell's article rather than just a summary of what his articled was about. I also I added some pieces of information to the summary as well. I added them whenever I was reading journals and came across information that would give some parts that were already there a citation since I noticed that wiki page for A Rape in Cyberspace was lacking some citations along with the information that was already there.

The peer reviews was one of the only things I did not get to in this class. Most people did not start on their articles so it was hard to review anything. It did help me when one of my classmates suggest that me and another student who chose the same journal combine our sandboxes. That is when I added a link to the other students sandbox to mine so I could see what she had so I would not do something she has already done. I also liked that the student that did the same article as me talked on our talk page and in person on what we needed to get done on our article. That helped a lot since peer reviewing kind of failed since most students did not even attempt to do anything. I appreciate the feedback that I got face-to-face from my peers. It helped out tremendously.

Overall, I will say that I like the concept of the class. Going out and searching for the answers to the questions that the instructor gave us was an interesting way of learning. As college students, we mostly get lectures where you listen and take notes from the teacher which can get quite boring. This course would have been more effective if everyone involved did their part but unfortunately that was not the case. It definitely made things in the course a little challenging but I tried my best where I could. I really enjoyed the assignment with the Second Life. It was very interesting way to turn a little time spent within a game into an assignment and I would recommend keeping that in for classes in the future.
