August 19, 2019: New Media
New Media to me is anything that is new and continuously being updated by developer making it user friendly. Social media is more of my generations new media it's hard for some to get the hang of it because it is continuously changing. Apps, computer systems and cameras are all examples of different in style and look from when they were first introduced to the public. New media has moved towards the easy access and digital world as well as it has been taking over minds simple thinking.
August 20, 2019: Defining New Media
In reference to Defining New Media I learned that it is just composed of different types of old media that we knew as one thing merged together forming a different new type of media which make more options available. New media is different from cyberculture which can be described being more focused on the social media aspect while new media is more focused on the culture around it and digital. They don't want us to stay stuck using one generations for of electronics they want us to be able to transition as each new technology is made the more you are going to have to convert to it giving into those trying to make a profit. I learned that the definition of new media is not what you initially think that it is and that there is much more to it.
- I think new media aside from just being old media put together also is the device. The devices that allow us to view all of the converged older media is also, in part, new media. - I think that new media is always changing, and like you stated about how old media is converged into making new media. It also always advancing, and you are correct that new media is more than what we think such as movies, cell phones, computers, etc... September 6, 2019: Foundational Thinkers
When reading up on some of the Foundational Thinkers I learned that Charles Babbage was an English mathematician and inventor among a lot of other things he was the creator of the first mechanical computer and with years of many improvements became the computers we use today. When Babbage made his computer invention it was meant to be used for arithmetic table for those numbers that had a constant difference he even put all his money into an invention just for the government to stop supporting him. The Memex was created by Vannevar Bush an American engineer and inventor he wanted the Memex to be more of a tool to store and keep information possibly even studying your brain I thought that was interesting. The Memex reminds me of the internet the way he described using codes to store the information which is a lot of what we use the internet for today.
September 6, 2019: Marshall McLuhan
Marshall McLuhan was a Canadian Philosopher that is mostly known for his phrase "The Medium is the Message" this point was to describe how we view the world has changed and how they were changed because of new media. The message of the medium is the change that comes from it being exposed to the human world like the example given about the railway and how it didn't introduce the way of getting around but it expanded for more opportunities to come from it. A good example that could be given to someone for a better understanding of the medium is the message is like how telephones were invented but once it got expanded into being a cell phone it changed the way people communicate and interact with each other. In the TED Talk "How Architecture Helped Music Evolve" I understood how it could relate to what Marshall McLuhan was saying even in music every thing at some point changes to make something better out of the out come.
@KhajadaNeal McLuhan was a man before his time. Not only did the " medium is the message " start his great vision of foreseeing things for the future. September 13, 2019: Nicholas Negroponte
Nicholas Negroponte meaning of "Being Digital" seemed to be more about living through life digitally and being able to adapt to it for example using the computer or cell phone you can now use to check your e-mails you don't have to be in one specific area it gives you more options. The title Being Digital was given to the new age of technology explaining how books that were once important will change and be important through the digital form as bits get better in the future. Negroponte says that "bits are bits" because they are what makes up everything that is digital it is a key component that causes the digital to work. In the digital world the medium isn't the message because the digital world can be interpreted in different ways by different people through many digital forms like an example of multimedia.
September 13, 2019: The Good Hacker
I found it interesting that there are good hackers it is just the bad end up with the exposure also to learn that Ben Franklin was a hacker and he started the first volunteer fire fighter company in Philadelphia called the brigade. The good hackers help fit my understanding of "Being Digital" because I learned they are trying to help improve and change the world through digital form not go into people bank accounts to scam. Some hackers just like to explore systems and get to the root and understanding it better because the hacker hacks to fix or improve. Ben Franklin is considered a life hacker and him being a philosopher helped him to advise and record for others he influenced many people and still does today.
- @KhajadaNeal: If you think about it, there are a lot of hackers out there. Every invention, every computer program aims to solve a problem. Even the paper clip has a purpose! - @KhajadaNeal: I think a lot of us will always think of hackers as the people who create viruses and break into banks. I never really thought about hacking as essentially being interchangeable with inventing. It makes sense if you think about things like life hacks. They are called hacks, though they are not malicious (though they are mostly dumb). They are pretty much just people inventing or "hacking" things to create something new. - @KhajadaNeal: When reading I definitely caught on fast that there are good hackers and bad hackers the bad most of the time gets put to the forefront and that's usually what we talk about. September 16, 2019: Linux
Richard Stallman is the founder of the free software movement and the GNU Project he paved the way to allow Linus Torvalds the ability to create Linux. This is where they created software for free and allowed people to come together to write different programs. Linux provides you with source codes for free but they still gain a profit through other distribution options that they have, for instance, the ability to purchase the older software. Users have full control over updates on the linux system, though difficult to set up on the computer, once it is installed it is easier and faster to help programs run. When Linux was first opened to the public there were a couple of people world wide that had already sent them back fixed software with different codes from the ones they originally posted. As Linux started to improve it's content it became competition for Microsoft Windows but with windows you have to pay for there content in order to use there source codes.

September 19, 2019: Understanding Software
Understanding Software I first had to learn what the GNU Project stood for "Gnu's Not Unix" Richard Stallman wanted to make sure you knew that it was something completely different from Unix because he took the time to replace everything in Unix. It was interesting that Richard Stallman and Bruce Perens couldn't agree on who should be able to have access to the open sources, Stallman felt that all the open sources should be used for free but Perens felt they should be kept a choice between being free and wanting to purchase it. The open source software have rules that they must follow for instance a source code can be restricted if it uses patch files if it is doing so just to build time. The GNU has a large portion of it's software copyrighted by the Free Software Foundation this copyright among others is there legal way of making sure it stay free to public. Open-source software and free software helped better my understanding of new media by realizing that open source is the root of what creates the new media that we are continuously getting today.
- @KhajadaNeal: Stallman is a very interesting guy. I'm not sure if you got the chance to watch the documentary yet, but it's so interesting to hear him talk about GNU and everything he stands for in that project. He saw something that he believed was wrong and created a solution. Bill Gates, on the other hand, believed that he was being stolen from and wrote a sassy letter toward the people he claimed were stealing from him. These are two completely different mindsets that kind of sound like the politics of the new media world. What do you think is more beneficial to the users and the creators? - @KhajadaNeal: I also thought it was interesting that Stallman and Perens could not agree at first on who should have the access to the open sources. In a way, I am on both sides of Stallman wanting it to be free and Perens wanting their to be a choice between being free and purchasing it. By users purchasing it, then it would mean more profit for the software. And, also it being free for the users meant more of an opportunity for them to want to use it. - @KhajadaNeal: I noted the same as everyone else. Perens idea was more aligned to what I figured as well. If everything is free, what was the point of all that hard work? For educational purposes of course, but some people put their lively hood in this type of work, and believe they should be paid for it. Stallmans idea of "free like beer" was super interesting to me. Beer is only free to the person who didn't initially purchase it. Someone has to buy it at some point to utilize it, it's the same with product. September 27, 2019: Copyright Law
Lawrence Lessig discusses in his TED talk "Laws that choke creativity" how the Copyright law and the technology of the remix culture clash but he also felt he had a solution to the problem. In the Remix culture it allows a person to be creative being able to add different sounds or music to already existing pictures and videos creating a whole new work of art. An artist that has a copyright attached to their work has protected it from others being able to use it to create something else that could possibly make a profit without their permission. The copyright law takes away from the new generations creativity it is in place to prevent piracy but a lot of young artist use old material just to create new meanings giving it a change.
Lessig suggested two strategies that he felt could make a change: those that create the original ideas could allow artist to use them for free but if they are actually trying to make a profit from their creation then they should purchase. The other suggestion is just for business to start excepting the new culture allowing free material so everyone can coexist together and possibly take notes from the other. Everything has been remade like music and movies that have been filmed over the years are remixes from other books and movies combined to make something but yet seems so familiar not all but most you have seen scenes just like them in other films.
September 28, 2019: Remix and Participatory Culture
In the remix culture it helps with understanding new media because in the remix culture you are remixing works of art that have already been created the same takes place in new media you join together different technology outlets combining them to make something new. Copyrights not only affect the amateurs but they can also cause a problem for professionals for example music artist can be sued by other artist or Musicians if a sample of their music sounds close to the version that was the original without being given permission. There are places in the world that don’t know how to fit the remix culture into the copyright laws because many questions have to be answered to put them in a category.
Learning that Participatory culture is what some would call todays generation because of the usage of Social media site as a way to connect with one another. It was suggested that some scholarship research showed that using social media helped better social skills which is surprising because you usually hear it takes away from the physical face to face social skills. In my understanding participatory culture wouldn’t be considered apart of the traditional definition of new media because it doesn’t focus on the social media aspect.

I am thinking the same thing about taking some aspect from a work, and using that and putting it into another new aspect to create something different. - @KhajadaNeal: Participatory culture doesn't exist through social media. Social media most definitely allows for easier participation so everyone can have more of a say in media. However, participatory culture has existed for quite a while. Henry Jenkins mentions in his Participatory culture TED talk that people would contribute to zines and print them themselves. This is a form of participatory culture. Participatory culture has just grown as technology has given us more opportunity to connect with the professionals who make mainstream media and others. It's pretty interesting looking back at how much this culture has developed. Sabub (talk)
- @KhajadaNeal: I agree with Sabub, participatory culture isn't social media per-say, but it's more the idea of social media being the medium for the culture. Its a direct plug for participation on both the side of the corporations, and regular people. Henry Jenkins mentioned in his Ted Talk Spiderman's Peter Parker, who needed to connect through newspaper to know what was going on with the world, now he, and we, have computers to do the hardest work for us.Kyannayeager (talk) 19:19, 29 September 2019 (EDT)

October 3, 2019: Computers and Dreams
When looking at Ted Nelson’s Computer Lib/Dream Machines it better helped understand what Sugata Mitra was trying to explain in his TED talk “Build a School in the Clouds” when it comes to learning and being taught about computers. Many people don’t want to take time to teach another person how to use a computer or other technologies, on the other end it can be because they want to keep information secluded which is how most important information is treated. The dream machines side helps you understand the root of the computer and how it is built to make your thoughts a reality but has concerns on how it affects learning abilities. Dream Machines goes along with understanding new media how to create certain fantasies you have to incorporate old medias like books, music and even video to make something new in technology.
This lets us know that Being Digital is taking over the world but if it is good or bad the answer is unknown because a lot of technology is sucking us into it. Like Nelson said media has us in different categories some fall victim to media, some learn to manipulate it or they have a vision they want to make happen. These ideas still provide a hacker spirit because they are all trying to make technology better for everyone even if they choose not to explain with someone else how they went about doing so. The fits my experience because my favorite game is Sims and in this game if you decide to advance yourself with more money you use a code as well as it building out my fantasy of my dream life.
October 5, 2019: Learning and Understanding
Learning that Millennials have a different preference other than what was expected of them when it comes to learning and understanding digital media. It’s not so much about the digital aspect it’s more of wanting to be able to learn in there own way like learning skills you need to know as you grow into an adult or getting life skills in a field you see as a potential career. Getting information digitally is a good source but it shouldn’t be the only form of learning the younger generation has they still need those that are willing to teach them in a face to face setting. It has been agreed with a lot of researchers that millennials are more group work oriented and are more likely to get out in the community for more hands on activities.
Millennials different approach to learning has no affect on the new media that will be produced in the future, it actually makes the anticipation even greater. Holography and flying cars have been in discussion for many years some have even made progress with the technology to produce such media like the Tupac hologram a few years ago that shocked everyone. Growing up in a generation that mostly knows about technology some researchers have the idea that millennials expect to mostly learn through technology when it can be a median of both books and internet.
- @KhajadaNeal:That's an interesting argument for the other side! I think I do my best learning in a digital setting. I guess it doesn't come as easily to other people and maybe some things are better taught in-person. Then again, I am lacking in skills that the internet doesn't quite help with. For example, I'm not a very good cook. I try those recipe videos and all, but it never goes well. Then again, I haven't watched any other kind of beginner videos which might help, but I feel that I would learn that better if someone would teach me in person. - @KhajadaNeal: I think you make a great point about how mililennials have different ways of learning. Some do best online or in face-to-face interaction. I like to learn information online, but I also like to learn in face-to-face interaction. I think it depends on the person. Learning doesn't have to face-to-face, learning can be done through technology or other necessary forms such as american sign language. - @Vada.amerson: Yes I think the different ways we learn are all different which is why they should put everyone in this generation as one. I learn best hands on being able to have someone explain it to me while trying it myself physically so I can do it properly.
October 7, 2019: Cyberspace
In the "You Only Live Twice: Virtual Reality Meets Real World in Second Life” it helped understanding that a lot of things take place to make cyberspace fully work. It takes many computers to keep all the visual world images up and continuously running and a lot of money goes into it from both producers and consumers. They incorporate different thing that make it new media once they started adding real stores into the game and not only being able to buy clothes to make your virtual person look better but buying things with your real money that you could get in reality. Virtual world show us that many people like living digitally through an online world you can get so lost into it you will be online for hours losing real world time. They have a hacker spirit because they are helping many people in these virtual worlds come out of there shell when pretending to be someone else. Cyberspace fits me because I love living through a virtual world creating my dream life, The Sims especially Sims 2 is my favorite game I have so much fun playing it, I like being control of what happens and I lose track of time and hours of sleep.
Real life is what we are physically in at this given time being able to move around freely not in a computer world but some things we do by law have consequences in reality. Cyberspace can influence a person or child they’ll start mixing what is reality and what is an allusion that’s how a lot of bad things happen when they mix up the two. This is where the virtual rape or not being able to act out shooting games that have been played. Cyberspace has changed a lot over the years they’re still working to fix bug problems with the soft ware that appear or glitches. Someone once questioned we were living in reality or are we someones avatar.
October 9, 2019: Cyberspace Avatar
First experience with creating a cyberspace avatar in Second Life and it was a bit challenging trying to change my characters appearance after selecting what avatar I wanted to use. After adjusting the clothes my avatar was already wearing but still not being fully successful with the outfit change I decided to look more into cyberspace and the virtual realities.
Being so used to playing one type of virtual reality game and never realizing that there are other types of games then learning that it’s over three hundred that operate from only thirteen internet softwares. Cyberspace comes from a word that comes from the Greek language and it wouldn’t be able to work without the advancement of the internet that is the reason it works. Some virtual realities are more focused on fantasy like Kingdom Hearts or Dungeon and Dragons for example than they are on creating a character and living your dream life like The Sims. Another difference is that some of these games allow you to chat with each other and do other magical tricks. The way creators continue to incorporate new things into these virtual worlds helps to understand new media because they are continually adding to them to attract more users as well as keep the old users interested.

- @KhajadaNeal: It's actually funny you say that about Kingdom Hearts because I remember there was an area in Second Life where people would role-play as characters from that game. That was actually a huge part of Second Life when I played. Lots of people used the game to role-play. This was also are the time when the Twilight novels were popular so there were a lot of vampire and werewolves role playing areas as well. There were also communities for furries, surfers, and motorcycle enthusiasts. Second Life really made it possible for people to experience and immerse themselves in various cultures. My personal favorite was walking around the feudal Japan-themed areas. October 12, 2019: Differences Between Ludology and Narratology
First before getting into the differences between ludology and narratology it was an interesting find to lean that there are people that study games and narratives. The main difference between the two is that with Narratology you can only picture the story being told but with Ludology the video games can give you a visual of the words. My understanding is that narrative would be the old media and games are the new media not all but some games do have a story behind them though it would be against some gaming rules. Gaming is another way of being digital because not only are people connected on the Internet but they are connected through gaming consoles playing games for hours and playing live with others.
So games can stay up to date and new skills or items added hacker have to work together to make sure everything works and flows together in the game. In the "Ludology: A Study of Video Games” it fits my experience because it talked briefly about The Sims which is my favorite game but the video discusses how it isn’t one of those games that have a story.
